Each year, Algonquin college’s public relations students get
together to make a difference in their community. This year
the students have chosen to support the cause of food
security through the Ottawa Food Bank.
Food is a basic human right and no one should have to go
hungry. Food and craving that is satisfied with a nutritious
meal, is a true definition of compassion. #CraveCompassion is
a message to the community to come together to support
the mission of providing food to all. Interesting and engaging
campaigns spread across genres like wellness, health and
fitness, painting, gaming and cooking, are being organized to
raise funds and awareness for the food bank.

The current times of the pandemic have only increased the need for food security. The OFB has provided its member agency programs with a combined total of $650,000 in financial support to help with their growing needs at this time. We need to showcase our compassion to support the growing need for food security in our city.
The Ottawa Food Bank is the main emergency food provider in the National Capital Region. Through a network of 112 community food programs, the Ottawa Food Bank provides food for over 39,000 people per month – 37 per cent of whom are children. With a focus on fresh, and thanks to the community’s support, on average 12 to 14 tons of food is distributed from their Michael Street warehouse every weekday. The Ottawa Food Bank is able to make your donation go far! For every dollar donated, they can provide approximately $5 worth of food to the community.
Through their network of 112 food programs, the Ottawa Food Bank provides food to over 39,000 people every month - 37% of these people are children. They wouldn’t be able to do this without your support.
Fresh is best! The Ottawa Food Bank doesn’t want to just provide food to people, rather, they want to provide the best food possible. Over 45% of the food they distribute is FRESH.
During an ideal growing season, the Ottawa Food Bank can harvest and distribute upwards of 136,000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables from their very own 8-acre Community Harvest farm.
We know we’re not the solution to hunger. The solution is dealing with the root causes of poverty. Until that our clients are presented with the answers they need – we will be there to help anyone and everyone who needs us… and we’ll be advocating for change on their behalf along the way.
When donating food, the Ottawa Food Bank likes to encourage healthy options. But beyond that, they want you to donate your family’s favourites… if it’s something you love, it will end up on the dinner table of someone else who will love it too.
